Look, if you go into this film knowing what to expect, you’re gonna have a really fun time. I was audibly laughing multiple times during the film. Now was this because the jokes were particularly funny? In most cases, no. I was fully laughing at the film, but through Jim Carey’s insane performance, a glorious tribute to Sonic lore and less of the humans than the first, this film actually is a pleasant ride.
The plot is nothing groundbreaking, there’s a maguffin, a villain who switches sides to defeat the real villain and a climatic final battle. There’s an abundance of awful jokes and a number of plot holes. However, despite all this there’s still something quite enjoyable about the blue blur’s second outing.
There’s a whole ass short film in here that is completely detached from the main plot that follows Natasha Rothwell. The writers knew exactly what they were doing cause it’s just perfect. This is in part to Rothwell just being such a comedic force, but I would’ve happily watched more of her character than we got, which is more than can be said about the other humans in the film.
Ben Schwartz is fantastic as usual with his voice acting performance. Did anyone else catch the Parks and Rec reference?!? It was beautiful. Colleen O’Shaughnessey does a great job as tails but Idris Elba… what was this? His performance as Knuckles is laughable bad at parts, his line delivery is all over the place and it sadly doesn’t immerse you in the world like the other 2 famous characters.
As someone who grew up on Sonic (I dyed my hair blue as a child to be more like Sonic) the plot of this film was more my speed than the first. There was multiple moments that were just a treat to see on screen as a fan, especially in the final battle. And that post credits scene.
A classic popcorn flick that benefitted so much by not taking itself too seriously, it was cool to see a genuinely absurd film from Hollywood. Where Sonic refers to himself as a penis and the Olive Garden product placement that was egregious in the first one actually comes back as a great joke.
