As a unabashed lover of animation, there is so much in this film to gush over. Sony animation studios really has one of the best redemption stories, with this and Spiderverse under their belts. The stylisation of the film is delightful, the use of 2D animation to emote Katie’s feelings, the beautiful colouring of the film, and the absolutely stunning cinematography at points (the cover page on Letterboxd) made it so easy to look at. Specifically the set design was insane, every set piece was fully detailed and so precise, the world felt lived in, for example even their family home felt like they had been there for years and had truly been using their surroundings instead of being passive in the environment.
The animation of the characters as well was so natural and realistic, from the little details like chewing on hoodie strings to the characters motions when getting emotional, like rubbing their arms, you could clearly see the emotions being conveyed through body language which is a feat in animation. Then going to the hyper scenes the characters animate and move is unique and fun ways.
The characterisation itself in the film was beautiful, every character in the family was given a chance to shine and given strong emotional and comedic moments. Speaking of the comedy, the film hit my humour so well, it’s the most I’ve laughed in a film in a while. Basing the humour in emotion and distinct characteristic traits was a smart move, each time there was a call back it added upon the humour. Both the mum and the brother had incredibly funny moments, when the mum gets mad and beats up the robots going full Mad Max, fantastic. Also the emotional beats really hit hard, it’s such a beautiful representation of a normal dysfunctional family.
The themes surrounding technology and it’s impact on our lives were interesting, all be it heavy handed, but I enjoyed the issues it decided to tackle and the way in which they told it. There was some small minor gripes I had with the film, a few jokes that didn’t land and an awful music choice at the end but the work and love that was put into animating this film is a feat itself.
Lord and Miller produce incredible animation, with this, Spiderverse, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and The Lego Movie I trust them to produce great animation. Also directed by the writer of Gravity Falls, this film is full of great creators in animation and it shows.
