Disney’s Luca, aka Vespa: the movie, is another hit from Pixar, a beautiful tale of friendship that perfectly captures the spirit of an unforgettable Summer. While Luca is certainly not the most innovative film in its plot, far away from the existential experience of Soul, it’s a simple tale that is perfectly refined through the Pixar lens. The plot does take a bit to get going but once we’re on the land the film has pace right until the finish line.
As this is a Pixar movie it’s no surprise that the animation is STUNNING, they’re truly the front runners in all things animation and what the animators are able to accomplish here is unparalleled to other animation films. Unlike Soul, Luca isn’t focused on the hyper realism mixed with the abstract concepts, it’s a quirky almost animation that kind of looks like Disney films with stop motion blended, and is completely beautiful throughout.
The cast of characters in the film are delightful as well and truly where the film shines, the main two, Luca and Alberto are super fun and engaging and their relationship blossomed so naturally throughout. The fight at the end of the second act was genuinely a shocking twist and made the ending hit in the classic Pixar way. And Guilia was such a fun addition too, the dynamic between the three added some needed tension and then eventual resolve, along with the help of the amazing character that is Guilia’s dad, aka discount Flint Lockwood’s dad. The scene where he goes to find Alberto was so small but man it packed an emotional punch. The characters are truly the heart of this film and Pixar masterfully knows how to give just enough characterisation to smaller characters to spark humour or sadness into their films.
And Sasha Baron Cohen. Man that end credit scene is fantastic. This is just a really sweet inoffensive film that is perfect for a light watch
Also this is basically Call Me By Your Name and I will not hear otherwise. A dad giving an emotional speech, “Some people will never accept him but some will and he seems to know how to find the good ones.” And the final scene at a train crying as they leave each other… ok Disney.
